No Fuel Gauge? Measuring Petrol in an MG T-Series

Why there's no fuel gauge

Sit behind the wheel of any T-Type and you will notice something missing from the dashboard: there is no fuel gauge. This is not an omission or a fault — the T-Series was built without one, quite deliberately, in keeping with the stripped-back, pre-war sporting character these cars have always carried. An MG driver of the 1930s or 1950s was expected to know their car, know their route and pay attention.

What the factory did give you is more subtle but perfectly workable. A small warning light on the dash glows amber when the tank is down to roughly its last couple of gallons — on the TC, for example, it comes on with about two and a half gallons still in hand, enough to see you comfortably to the next pump if you are paying attention. Earlier cars added a fuel reserve system with a tap under the dash: turn it as the engine coughs and you unlock a small reserve, a signal that the main tank has run out and it is time to find fuel now rather than in ten miles' time.

Beyond that, the trip meter does the real work. Reset at every fill-up, it is the fuel gauge these cars were designed around.

Managing fuel on the road

Managing fuel in a T-Type is a matter of two numbers and one habit. The first number is your tank capacity — nominally around 12 imperial gallons on the TA/TB/TC and slightly more on the TD/TF, though every tank is a little different and it pays to know your own. The second is your real-world consumption. A healthy XPAG or XPEG on twin SUs will return roughly the high-20s to the imperial gallon in ordinary touring use, so a full tank is worth around 300 miles of enjoyable driving before the warning light thinks about coming on.

The habit is the trip meter. Zero it every single fill-up, without exception, and refuel by mileage rather than by feel. Combine that with an eye on the warning light and, on earlier cars, an understanding of where the reserve tap is and which way it turns, and you have all the fuel management the car ever needed.

A few sensible extras go with the territory. Keep a small metal reserve can strapped somewhere sensible — a gallon in the boot has saved more T-Types than any warning light. Use E5 super unleaded rather than the standard 95 E10: it is kinder to the fuel system, kinder to the carburettors and the fuel the engine was really designed around today. Make your own fuel dipstick

The most useful thing any T-Type owner can do is spend an afternoon making a fuel dipstick. It costs almost nothing, lives under the seat, and turns "I think we've got about half a tank" into a proper number.

The recipe could not be simpler. Buy a length of half-inch (½") dowel from any hardware or DIY shop — around two feet is plenty. Sand the end smooth, unscrew the fuel filler cap on a level surface, and lower the stick straight down until it touches the bottom of the tank. Pull it out, note the wet line, and there is your reading.

To turn wet inches into gallons, mark the dowel at the depths in the chart below. The figures are inches measured up from the bottom of the stick, and are drawn from a long-standing T-Series owners' reference used by generations of drivers. The NA entries in the TA/TB/TC column simply reflect that the earlier cars have a smaller tank — it doesn't hold the higher gallon figures at all, so those depths do not exist. The TD/TF column is scaled to the larger later tank.

Mark the dowel with a fine saw cut or a pencil line labelled with the gallon figure, seal it with a wipe of clear varnish so petrol doesn't lift the marks, and you are done.

A word on accuracy

Two cars are never quite identical, and two fuel tanks even less so. Take the figures above as a well-established starting point rather than gospel: senders, tank shape after decades of service, slight differences in how the car sits on its springs and even how level the ground is under it all shift the numbers a little.

The sensible thing is to calibrate your own stick against your own car. Run the tank down until the warning light has been on for a while, then add fuel a known amount at a time — a single gallon is ideal — dipping and marking after each pour. An afternoon's patient work gives you a stick that is right for your car, not the average one.
