The definitive guide to MG's TA, TB, TC, TD and TF, 1936 to 1955.

The short answer

What is the MG T-Series?

The MG T-Series, often called the T-Types, is a family of five open two-seat sports cars built by MG at Abingdon, Oxfordshire, between 1936 and 1955: the TA, TB, TC, TD and TF. All five share a separate steel chassis, an ash-framed body tub with steel panels, a four-cylinder pushrod engine driving the rear wheels, and half-elliptic leaf springs. Three engines were used across the run: the 1,292 cc MPJG in the TA, the 1,250 cc XPAG from the TB onwards, and the 1,466 cc XPEG in the TF 1500.

They are widely regarded as the last of the traditional MGs. The TA and TB are pre-war cars with beam front axles; the TC carried that vintage character into 1945; the TD brought independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and factory left-hand drive; and the TF closed the series with faired-in headlamps and, from late 1954, the larger XPEG engine. The MGA that replaced the TF in 1955 was a different kind of car altogether.

Around 52,000 T-Types were built in total, and a large share of them left Britain. The TC seeded the American sports-car market almost single-handedly, shipped home by returning servicemen despite being right-hand drive only; the TD was the first T-Type designed for export, and the majority went to the United States. That split still shows today: the UK and US are both major T-Type communities, with parts, values and paperwork differing between them.

Key differences between the T-Types

The five cars look alike at a glance, but each one changed something significant. This is the shortest honest summary of what separates them.

TA (1936–1939)
The only T-Type with the 1,292 cc MPJG engine, and the only one with an oil-immersed cork clutch. Beam front axle, sliding trunnion suspension, 19-inch wheels.
TB (1939)
Introduced the 1,250 cc XPAG engine and a conventional dry-plate clutch. Otherwise a TA. Production was cut short by the war at 379 cars, making it the rarest T-Type.
TC (1945–1949)
Essentially a post-war TB with a four-inch-wider body. Right-hand drive only, beam front axle, and the most vintage in character. The car that opened the US market.
TD (1950–1953)
The big engineering step: new box-section chassis, independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering from the Y-type, 15-inch bolt-on disc wheels in place of wires, and factory left-hand drive. Best-selling and easiest to live with.
TF and TF 1500 (1953–1955)
A restyled TD: headlamps faired into the wings, sloping grille, lower bonnet line and a higher-compression engine. From late 1954 the 1,466 cc XPEG made it the TF 1500, identified by the engine prefix, never the badge.
