Come back to a T-Series after a hot-day stop and it can crank and crank without firing — or fire, splutter and stall. It is not the car falling apart; it is the petrol boiling before it ever reaches the cylinders. With today''s fuel and hotter summers, it is an increasingly common story — and a very manageable one once you understand it.
Why it happens (and why it is getting worse)
Petrol is meant to vaporise easily — that is how a carburettor works. But when the engine bay gets hot enough, the fuel starts turning to vapour in the wrong places: in the pipes, or in the carburettor float chambers. Two things make a classic like the T-Series far more prone to this today than when it was built:
- Modern petrol. Today''s fuel — especially ethanol-blended E10 — boils at a lower temperature and vaporises perhaps 20–30% more readily than the petrol these cars were designed around. It is blended for emissions, not for old carburettors.
- Hotter summers. Days of 30°C and beyond that were once rare are now routine, and under the bonnet it is far hotter still.
The "heat soak" trap
The worst moment is not while you are driving — it is 10 to 30 minutes after you switch off on a hot day. With the engine stopped there is no coolant flow and no air moving, so all that stored heat soaks upward into the fuel lines and carburettors, and the petrol sitting in them boils. Start straight away and it is usually fine; leave it an hour and it is fine; it is that middle window that catches you out — which is exactly why it strikes at the pub, the petrol station or the show field.
Two related things are going on:
- Vapour lock: fuel vaporises on the *supply* side (the pipes and pump), so the pump is trying to push vapour instead of liquid and the engine is starved. It cranks but will not fire.
- Percolation: heat boils the fuel in the *carburettor float chambers*, flooding the engine with over-rich vapour. It cranks, may catch and splutter, and reeks of petrol.
The symptoms
- Runs perfectly, but will not restart after a short stop on a hot day.
- Cranks but will not fire (starvation), or fires and stumbles with a strong petrol smell (flooding).
- A rough, hunting idle and stalling in slow, hot traffic.
- It all comes right once the car has cooled down — the tell-tale sign that it is heat, not a fault.
The roadside cure
The goal is to cool the fuel and clear the vapour:
- Get some cooling in. Park in shade if you can and open the bonnet to let the heat out. If you have water to hand, pouring or wiping cool water over the fuel pump, the fuel line and the float chambers condenses the vapour back to liquid quickly.
- Give it a few minutes. Even without water, a short wait with the bonnet up often does it.
- Clear a flooded engine. If it is flooded (percolation), hold the throttle wide open while cranking — this vents the vapour and leans out the mixture. When it catches, keep it running until it clears (a puff of smoke is normal). Do not sit endlessly cranking, which only floods it further.
Preventing it — the fixes that work
Physical fixes work; additives generally do not. In rough order of effort:
- Insulate and re-route the fuel line away from the exhaust manifold, and replace old rubber hose with modern ethanol-rated line. Heat-reflective sleeving is cheap and effective.
- Fit a heat-insulating (phenolic) spacer or heat shield between the carburettors and the manifold, to slow the heat soaking into the float chambers — one of the most effective single steps.
- Keep the engine bay cool. A healthy cooling system, correct timing and (for some) an electric fan all lower under-bonnet temperatures; leaving the bonnet ajar when parked on a scorching day genuinely helps.
- Mind your fuel. The T-Series has one built-in advantage here — its SU electric fuel pump sits at the cool rear of the car and *pushes* fuel under pressure, which resists vapour lock far better than an engine-mounted pump. Keep it healthy. And choosing ethanol-free or low-ethanol super unleaded (E5) over E10 measurably reduces the tendency.
Do not misdiagnose it
Because modern mechanics rarely meet it, hot-start trouble is often mistaken for a failing fuel pump, a worn carburettor or an ignition fault — and money gets spent chasing the wrong thing. The give-away is the pattern: it only happens hot, after a short stop, and always comes good once cool. Rule the heat in first.
