Cleaning the air filter

The T-Series uses oil-wetted wire-gauze filters, not paper. They are cleaned and re-oiled, not replaced — get the oil quantity right and the carbs will thank you.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Unbolt and remove the filter(s)

Take the filter(s) off the SU carburettor intakes. Note orientation and any fibre washers so it goes back the same way.

  2. 02

Wash out the old oil and dirt

Wash the gauze thoroughly in paraffin (kerosene) or a proprietary parts cleaner until the run-off is clean. Do NOT use petrol (fire risk) or water alone.

  3. 03

    Let it dry completely

Shake off surplus solvent and leave the element to dry fully — any solvent left in the mesh will be pulled into the carburettors.

  4. 04

    Re-oil the gauze

Dip the gauze in light engine oil (SAE 20 is fine) then let it drip until it just stops. The mesh should be wetted, not dripping. Over-oiling restricts airflow and richens the mixture.

  5. 05

    Refit and check

Refit with the correct orientation and washers. Check the carb intakes are still clear of drips.
