MG TC for sale: where to look, prices and pitfalls

Around 10,000 TCs were built between 1945 and 1949, all with right-hand drive, and a large share went to the United States. This guide covers where to look, what to pay and the pitfalls before you agree a price.

Where to look

This is an independent guide, not a list of cars for sale, and it makes no claims about any one seller.

In the UK, MG TCs are sold through specialist T-Type dealers, through auction houses, such as Mathewsons in North Yorkshire, through online auction and classified sites, and through the classified pages of the club magazines, where cars often come with known owners and real history.

In the US, most cars change hands through online auctions and classified sites, with auction houses and the T-Type club magazines and registers covering the rest. The venues the archive tracks, with notes on each, are listed in Buying an MG T-Type: what they cost, and the trade-offs between buying at auction, from a dealer or privately are set out in Auction, Dealer or Private?.

What to pay

The UK bands below are indicative ranges by condition, not valuations. The source for each row is shown beneath it, and the values guide explains how the bands were compiled.

Red flags

  • Left-hand drive. Every TC was right-hand drive, so a left-hand-drive car has been converted.
  • Independent front suspension or rack-and-pinion steering. The TC has a beam front axle on leaf springs and a Bishop cam steering box. A TC with either of the TD's systems has been modified.
  • A TB or TC that is not what it claims. The two are mechanically almost the same car. The TC tub is about four inches wider across the seats, and the engine numbers differ: TB numbers run from XPAG/501 to about XPAG/882 and TC numbers from XPAG/883 upward. The chassis and engine number guide explains the checks.
  • A tired ash frame or wire wheels. The TC rides on 19-inch centre-lock wire wheels, and its body is steel over ash. The MG TC buying guide covers both in full.

Questions to ask the seller

  1. What are the chassis and engine numbers, and do they match the documents?
  2. Has the MG Car Club T Register factory record been checked, and does it agree with the car?
  3. Has the car ever been converted to left-hand drive, or back again?
  4. Has the ash frame been repaired or renewed, and by whom?
  5. When were the wire wheels last trued and checked, and what receipts come with the car?

Common questions

Where can I buy an MG TC?
In the UK, through specialist T-Type dealers, auction houses such as Mathewsons in North Yorkshire, online auction and classified sites, and club magazine classifieds. In the US, most TCs change hands through online auctions and classified sites, with auction houses and the club registers covering the rest.
How much should I pay for an MG TC?
The archive's UK bands run from about £13,900 for a needy car, £20,000 to £30,000 for a good one and £30,000 to £40,000 for an excellent one, to about £46,600 for a concours car. The CLASSIC.COM US market benchmark for the TC, read in October 2026, is $29,048, a single benchmark rather than a condition range.
Is a left-hand-drive MG TC original?
No. Every TC was built with right-hand drive, so a left-hand-drive TC has been converted.
