The MG T-Series in 1953

The MG TF was launched on 15 October 1953, so 1953 contains both the end of TD production and the first TFs. The TF is a facelifted TD: headlamps faired into the wings, sloping radiator grille, pressurised cooling, and the TD Mark II engine at 8:1 compression giving 57.5 bhp at 5,500 rpm.

  • The TF was launched on 15 October 1953, which means a genuine 1953 TF is an early car built in the last weeks of the year.
  • The 1,466 cc XPEG engine was not fitted until 21 July 1954, so an original XPEG car cannot be a 1953 build.
  • TD production ran 1950–1953 to roughly 29,664 cars in total.

Engine and chassis traits

TF front-end restyle

Headlamps faired into the wings, a sloping radiator grille concealing a separate radiator, a lower waistline, and pressurised cooling with a decorative external filler cap that is for looks rather than function.

XPAG/TF engine

The 1953 TF uses the 1,250 cc XPAG in TD Mark II form — 8:1 compression, twin SU carburettors, 57.5 bhp at 5,500 rpm — carrying the XPAG/TF prefix.

Independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering

The TD's box-section chassis carries coil-and-wishbone independent front suspension derived from the Y-Type and rack-and-pinion steering, on bolt-on 15 in disc wheels with 5.50–15 tyres. Look underneath at the frame below the rear spring hangers, where TD cracking is well documented.

  • Chassis: TF0648 or TF648 — the leading zero is optional.
  • Engine: XPAG/TF/… on a 1,250 cc car. An XPEG prefix on a car sold as a 1953 build needs explaining.
