MG TD & TF Modern Upgrades: Front Disc Brakes and Telescopic Dampers

Two changes do more than any others to bring a TD or TF's stopping and ride up to modern-road standards: a front disc brake conversion in place of the standard drums, and telescopic dampers in place of the original lever-arm units. Neither is necessary — a T-Series with its standard brakes and dampers properly maintained is entirely safe and correct — but both are well-proven, widely supported by the specialist trade, and worth understanding properly before you spend the money.

What the standard car has

Every T-Series, TA through TF 1500, left Abingdon with hydraulic drum brakes at all four corners and hydraulic lever-arm dampers front and rear. On a TD or TF specifically, the front lever-arm dampers also form part of the front suspension geometry, so they are doing two jobs at once. Both systems are well engineered for their period and, properly maintained, remain safe and pleasant to use. What changes on modern roads is context: sustained motorway speeds, following distances set by modern traffic, and the heat load of stop-start driving all ask more of drum brakes and lever-arm dampers than Abingdon's engineers were designing for in the early 1950s.

Front disc brake conversion

Two specialist kits are currently available and give a sense of what a front disc conversion actually involves.

::: Moss Motors — a kit built around a forged-aluminium hub assembly, a 10.75 in x 0.81 in rotor and an FDL-M caliper (a modified version of the Forged Dynalite-type caliper). Built for cars on 14–15 in wheels and explicitly not for wire wheels. Fits with no modification on late TD and all TF cars; early TD cars, which use BSF-threaded studs, need a set of SAE lug nuts to suit the kit's hardware. :::

::: Abingdon Spares — a complete kit (adapter plates, calipers, pads, rotors, hubs, brake hoses, front wheel bearings and hardware), offered in two versions: one for steel-wheel cars and a separate kit (model 31-065) for wire-wheel cars — useful for owners who assumed a disc conversion meant giving up wire wheels. :::

Neither supplier's published listing specifies a master-cylinder upgrade as standard. Budget for checking — and likely uprating — yours as part of the job, since a disc front end generally wants different fluid displacement to a drum front end, and have this confirmed by whichever supplier you buy from.

Telescopic damper conversion

The original equipment is a hydraulic lever-arm damper at each corner. Two conversion kits from Moss Motors show what's involved in going telescopic:

Note the front kit's application: late TD and all TF only — it is not listed for early TD cars, so check fitment carefully against your car's date before ordering. The rear conversion is listed across the full TD/TF range.

Reconditioned and new Armstrong-pattern lever-arm units are still available from the same suppliers, so converting to telescopic is a choice, not the only path. Reversibility

Both conversions are designed to bolt to the standard car — the disc kits are built around the OEM drum spindles, and the damper kits are described by their supplier as bolt-on brackets. Keep the original hubs, drums, backplates, shoes and lever-arm units when you remove them: they hold real value to a future owner, and they are what lets the car go back to standard specification if a future keeper wants that.

The UK "substantial change" question

Chassis

Has the chassis frame been replaced or modified in the last 30 years?

A new frame to the original pattern, or repair sections welded in, is not the same as changing to a different chassis design.

Sourcing in the UK

Both kits described above are US-market products from US suppliers. UK-based owners should start with the specialists this site already trusts — Moss Europe, NTG Motor Services and Brown & Gammons, all in the specialists directory — and ask what they can supply or source directly, rather than assume US parts and UK cars are a straightforward fit for shipping, duty and BSF/SAE hardware differences.

What we'd suggest

For a car kept mainly for shows and short runs, the standard drums and lever-arms, properly maintained, are the right and correct choice — see the running-gear guide. For a TD or TF that does real motorway miles, front discs are the single biggest safety-relevant upgrade available, and pair naturally with a five-speed gearbox conversion — between them they do the most to make the car usable at modern road speeds. Telescopic dampers are the smaller, more optional change of the two; many owners find a well-rebuilt set of lever-arms perfectly satisfactory and choose to spend the damper budget elsewhere.
