The clutch judders, slips or drags

A T-type clutch is a simple mechanical thing — a pedal, a rod, a lever, a fork and a single plate — and that simplicity is why so many clutch complaints on these cars are not the clutch at all. Before anyone lifts a gearbox out, it is worth knowing that oil contamination, tired mountings and a worn operating rod between them account for a great many judders, and that the T-Series uses three different clutches across its life.

Three clutches, one model range

The T-Series is often talked about as one car, and the clutch is where that habit causes the most wasted money. The TA uses a wet cork clutch: a plate carrying cork inserts, running in engine oil fed from the rear of the crankshaft. It is long-lived when used, and notorious for sticking to its faces if the car stands for years without the clutch being operated.

The TB introduced the dry single-plate Borg & Beck clutch alongside the XPAG engine, and that arrangement carries through the rest of the range. It appears in 7¼in form on the TB, TC and early TD — the same driven plate is catalogued across TB, TC, early TD and the Y-type — with the larger 8in clutch arriving with the TD2 engine prefix during 1951 and continuing on the TF and TF 1500.

That mid-production change is the practical reason to identify the engine and bell housing in front of you before ordering anything. Engines and gearboxes have been swapped freely in seventy years of ownership, and a car titled as a 1951 TD may well carry either clutch. The pattern worth internalising is that slip points at the clutch and drag points at the linkage. Judder sits between the two and is most often contamination or a tired mounting.

    Describe the fault precisely before touching anything

    Judder, slip, drag and squeal are four different faults with almost no overlap in cause. Judder is a shudder as the clutch takes up. Slip is engine speed rising without the car following. Drag is the car creeping or the gears grating with the pedal flat to the floor. Squeal is noise, usually only with the pedal moving. Decide which you have before you take a spanner to the linkage.

    Check the pedal travel and free play at the linkage

    Every T-type uses a purely mechanical clutch — rod, lever and fork, with no hydraulics anywhere. Too little free play holds the release bearing lightly against the fingers and will eventually slip the clutch; too much means the pedal runs out of travel before the plate is fully released, which reads as drag. Set the free play at the adjustment on the operating rod, and take the actual figure from the Workshop Manual for your model, because it differs between the TC and the TD/TF linkage and is not a figure to guess at.

    Look at the pedal stop and the operating rod

    On the TD and TF a pedal stop limits how far the pedal can travel. If it is missing, wrongly set, or the floor has been re-laid over it, the pedal can be pushed far enough to over-stress the linkage. The threaded operating rod that runs to the lever on the side of the sump is a known breakage point on these cars, and a bent or cracked rod, a worn fork pin or a sloppy clevis will produce vague, uneven take-up that feels exactly like a worn plate.

    Check the engine and gearbox mountings

    Judder is transmitted, not just generated. Perished or collapsed engine mountings, a loose gearbox mount, or worn rear-spring bushes let the whole power train rock as the clutch bites, and the driver feels a shudder. This is the cheapest thing on the list and worth eliminating before the gearbox comes out.

    Look for oil on the friction face

    The commonest single cause of both judder and slip on a T-type is oil. A weeping crankshaft rear oil seal or scroll, an over-full sump, or a leaking gearbox front seal puts oil onto the linings, which then grab and release instead of taking up smoothly. Pull the bell-housing bottom cover and look: oil inside condemns the plate, and fitting a new one without curing the leak simply buys you a repeat job.

    Confirm slip properly

    Test on a firm uphill in a high gear at low revs, with the handbrake ready. A clutch that slips will let the engine speed climb while road speed does not, and often smells hot afterwards. If free play is correct, the linkage is sound and there is no oil, a slipping clutch means worn linings or weak pressure springs, and the gearbox has to come out.

    Identify which clutch you actually have before ordering parts

    The T-Series is not one clutch. The TA uses a wet cork clutch running in engine oil; the TB introduced the dry single-plate Borg & Beck that the rest of the range uses, in 7¼in size for the TB, TC and early TD; the larger 8in clutch arrived with the TD2 engine prefix during 1951 and continues on the TF. Engines get swapped in cars this age, so match parts to the engine and bell housing actually in front of you rather than to the year on the log book.

    Do the renewal as a set, not a plate

    With the gearbox out, renew the driven plate, the cover assembly and the release bearing together, check the flywheel face for heat cracking, blueing and scoring, and have it skimmed if needed. Check the first-motion-shaft spigot bearing and the release fork pivot while access is free. Fit the plate the correct way round, centre it with a mandrel or an old shaft, and tighten the cover progressively so it is not distorted.

    Bed it in and re-check the adjustment

    A new plate needs a few hundred gentle miles, and the free play should be checked again once everything has settled. Persistent judder on a freshly-fitted set almost always turns out to be a mounting, a linkage or an oil leak that was never the plate's fault in the first place.

Figures we are not going to invent

Clutch pedal free play, the pedal-stop setting and the cover-bolt torque differ between the TC and the TD/TF, and between the 7¼in and 8in assemblies. Rather than publish one number and hope, take those figures from the Workshop Manual for your model — the XPAG and XPEG settings and torque page explains how this site attributes every published figure, and where the factory manuals themselves disagree. Common questions

Why does my MG TD clutch judder as it takes up?
On a T-type, judder is far more often contamination or slack than worn linings. Oil on the friction face from a leaking crankshaft rear seal or an over-full sump is the classic cause, followed by perished engine or gearbox mountings, a worn or bent operating rod and clevis, and incorrect free play. Check all of those before assuming the plate is finished.
What clutch does an MG T-Series use?
The TA has a wet cork clutch running in engine oil. The TB introduced a dry single-plate Borg & Beck clutch, used at 7¼in on the TB, TC and early TD, with a larger 8in clutch arriving with the TD2 engine prefix during 1951 and carried on through the TF. Confirm which is fitted to your car rather than assuming from the model year.
Why won't my TA clutch free off after standing?
The TA's cork clutch plate runs in engine oil, and after a long lay-up the corks can stick to the flywheel and driven faces so the clutch will not release at all. It is a well-known TA characteristic rather than a fault, which is one reason a TA is best not left standing for years with the clutch unused.
Can I adjust a slipping T-type clutch?
Only if the slip is caused by too little free play at the linkage, which holds the release bearing against the fingers and prevents the clutch clamping fully. If free play is correct and the plate is oil-free, slip means worn linings or weak pressure springs, and no amount of adjustment will cure it — the gearbox has to come out.
The gears grate with the pedal flat to the floor — is the clutch worn?
That is drag, not wear. It usually means the plate is not being fully released: too much free play, a stretched or bent operating rod, a worn fork or pivot, a mis-set pedal stop, or a driven plate rusted to the flywheel after standing. Check the linkage geometry first; a worn plate normally slips rather than drags.
Is the clutch pedal free play the same on a TC as a TD?
No. The TC and the TD/TF use different pedal and linkage arrangements, and the specified free play differs, so take the figure from the Workshop Manual for your model. This site deliberately does not publish a single free-play figure for all T-Types, because there is not one.
