The T-Series clutch is a simple, robust single dry-plate design, but it has a small repertoire of familiar complaints — slipping, dragging and judder — each with its own tell and its own cure. Knowing which is which saves you from pulling the gearbox when a pushrod adjustment or a bleed would have done. Here is how the clutch works across the TC, TD and TF, and how to read and fix its three classic faults.
How it works
From the TB onward the T-Series uses a Borg & Beck single dry-plate clutch: a friction plate splined to the gearbox input shaft and clamped against the flywheel by a spring-loaded cover. Pressing the pedal releases the clamp so you can change gear. What differs between the models is how the pedal reaches the clutch:
- TC: a purely mechanical linkage of rods and levers.
- TD and TF: hydraulic operation, with a master cylinder at the pedal and a slave cylinder at the bellhousing — the same principle as the brakes.
Slipping
The revs rise but the car does not gather speed to match, worst in top gear or up a hill. Causes, in order: a worn friction plate, or — very commonly — oil contamination from a leaking crankshaft rear seal or gearbox front seal glazing the friction surface. If yours is slipping and the rear main seal has been weeping, the two are related. A slipping clutch only gets worse: it means the gearbox out, a new plate, and curing the oil leak at the same time, or the new plate will go the same way.
Dragging
The clutch will not fully release: gears crunch going in, especially first and reverse from rest, and the car creeps with the pedal down. On the TD/TF the usual cause is air or a fault in the hydraulics — a tired master or slave cylinder, or fluid that needs bleeding — so it is often a cheap fix. On the TC it is linkage adjustment (too much free play) or a stretched linkage. Worn hub splines or a warped plate can drag too.
Judder
A shudder through the car as the clutch takes up when pulling away. Suspect oil on the plate again, a worn plate, or — just as often — worn engine and gearbox mountings letting the drivetrain shuffle, or worn splines. Check the mounts before condemning the clutch.
Adjustment and bleeding
- TC: set the specified pedal free play at the linkage — a little free movement before the clutch begins to release. Too little causes slip; too much causes drag.
- TD/TF: the hydraulics are self-compensating, so there is no free-play adjustment as such, but check the master-cylinder pushrod clearance and bleed the system if the pedal is spongy or the clutch drags. Renew tired master and slave cylinders as a pair.

When it is gearbox-out time
Slipping from a worn or oiled plate, worn splines, or a failed release bearing (a rumble or squeal when the pedal is pressed) all mean removing the gearbox. It is not a small job, so do it once and do it fully: new plate, cover and release bearing together, spigot bearing checked, and any oil leak cured while you are in there. If you are considering a five-speed conversion, that is the moment to decide.
