The rear axle is hypoid and needs a proper EP (extreme-pressure) oil — but note this is the opposite of the gearbox, which must NOT see modern hypoid additive packages.
Step by step
- 01
Get the car level
Chock the wheels and raise both rear wheels equally so the axle sits level. A tilted axle gives a false level reading.
- 02
Find the filler/level plug first
Locate the filler/level plug on the rear of the axle casing before undoing anything. If it will not shift, do not drain — you will be stranded with an empty axle.
- 03
Drain and inspect
Drain into a pan, inspect the drain plug (magnetic plugs trap swarf — a small amount of fine fuzz is normal; large flakes are not). Clean, refit with a sound washer.
- 04
Refill to the level plug
Pump the new hypoid oil in through the filler until it just weeps from the level hole — that is the correct level. Overfilling can force oil past the pinion seal.
- 05
Refit and drive gently
Refit the plug with its washer. Drive gently for the first few miles and re-check for leaks.
